The Acacia I would guess would have been more than 15 metres. It had already been felled before I arrived, as part of a progamme to control the infestation damage in the Park caused by this species. The trunk sections , eight in total were between 1.5 to 2.0 metres long. At present I have begun working on three of the lengths. Photographs and a complete account of the work to follow.26.04.2007<br /><br />Some notes on the tree - Australian Blackwood "Acacia melanoxylon". Heartwood is golden to dark brown with a slight reddish tinge and regular dark chocolate brown splotches. The tree can grow to 25m and have a diameter of about 170cm. Also called Black Wattle. Fine texture, straight grain. Machining characteristics are good, but irregular sections should be machined with care and attention. Takes an excellent finish. Very similar to Koa. Typical Uses: Furniture, gunstocks, decorative veneers, cabintry, interior woodwork.
